It’s so annoying when little old ladies write books in which the young characters all speak like …. Little old ladies! This book is very dated and feels like you’re stepping back in time. I mean really, a twenty-something would never say anything like, “those slips are lovely.” (chapter 2)!! And okay, maybe in 2002 not everyone had a cell phone, but hello, store registers were computers even back then. A sales clerk in a major department store wouldn’t “write down” a shopper’s info. A random friend of a clerk couldn’t just ring up sales without having a login and being trained. Another thing about working in a store – the author should know that “personnel offices” went out in when was it, the early 80’s? There is no such thing. Even the most traditional business would have switched to Human Resources by now! The list of other dated/old lady clues goes on calling someone a “pickle puss”? A phone caller getting a busy signal (rare but still possible)? An interest in homicide is “unfeminine”? Cooking is an “offbeat hobby” for a man? Most of the guys I know cook more than my women friends. O’Neill should set her stories in the 1950’s; then at least maybe they’d make more sense. What 20-something puts on a pants suit to go visit her grandma? And what the heck are “bike pants”?
